Oleg should not have been charged nor should he now be forced into the status of an international refugee without papers. I have worked with him in NYC at Exit Art and in the Netherlands at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. He is dedicated, nuanced and challengingly poetic. Oleg's performance art, like all art, can be read only under the multifaceted lights of social perception.
For one viewer the use of Oleg's own body for a sacrificial expression of this sort is a type of performance reserved for saints alone, so he should be sainted. For another, it grounds all messianic status to the level of human dedication to myriad philosophies , making the miraculous into mere profane advertisement.
